PREVIEW: PHIL FROST AT ACE GALLERY

background

New York-based artist Phil Frost got his start as a street artist, scoping out potential locations and then returning home to make his intricate works, segmented into panels that he would later install in said locations. Today, his multi-layered constructions are displayed in galleries and incorporate found objects, bold patterns, typography, and vaguely tribal motifs. Oftentimes cartoonish characters lurk beneath the patterns, displaying menacing or dopey expressions, perhaps as representation of the quirky and diverse characters often found in urban life.

Frost’s show, “The Solace of the Sword” opens at Ace Gallery in LA on July 20th.
