ROUND UP: A GUIDE TO CINCO DE MAYO

Finally. A nice warm weekend is expected, and Mother Nature has her timing just right. Cinco De Mayo is around the corner, and there is probably no better city (in California at least) to celebrate the festivities. While getting out the hot glue gun to create a DIY piñata and prepping that taco bar of your dreams sounds sensational, here is a list of fiestas that may make you rethink staying in. Prepare for luxe tequila tasting and opportunities to salsa.

missioncantina

Busy Sunday? The Mission Cantina will be throwing a Saturday and Sunday back to back extravaganza from noon to 2 a.m. Expect Mariachis, a photo booth to capture your slightly reddened mug, and some giveaways. Click here for the scoop.

new era 5

New Era, the only source for a fitted cap, is opening its flagship store’s doors for an afternoon bar-b-que. Stop by between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. for catered tacos, a cold Jarritos, live art by Mimi Yoon and spin art with the Scratch DJ Academy. Setting the mood with tunes will be our main man DJ Hapa. More info here.

PlanCheck-MedRes-2-620x323

If you are trying to avoid the typical Mexican food, Plan Check, a quaint gastropub, will be celebrating with their Cheeseburger Machismo (think Habanero cheese, bacon, spicy mayo, onion rings, and jalapeno escabeche.) This specialty sandwich can be paired with a $5 margarita, or their tequila specials. Find more about the innovative eatery here.

street

You may be lining up at your local taco truck come Sunday, but if you want to venture outside the box wander over to Susan Feniger’s STREET. She is bringing a variety from land and sea when it comes to taco options, and invites you to toss the strawberry margarita aside for a Hot Chile Lime flavored assortment. Check out the hours and more about the chef here.

estevan

Estevan Oriol has captured the essence of LA through his photography for decades. Los Angeles pizza legend Pizzanista! will be hosting, and the photo aficionado will be creating his own signature pie for the celebration. Expect DJ sets from the man of the hour, DJ Skee and Three Mike B. See Oriol’s art here.

mola

The Museum of Latin American Art will be celebrating El Batalla de Puebla with craft beers courtesy of LA-Based Golden Road Brewery and live mariachi music to boot. Light Mexican appetizers will be provided as you listen to the authentic sounds of Mariachi Bella and Ricardo Duque. Read more about the cultural event here.

lucha

Combine luchadors and burlesque and you get Lucha VaVOOM, the ridiculous and spectacular event featuring babes, masked wrestling, and a night of comedy. For the special cultural holiday, they will be dishing out the same ludicrous events and behavior. Find out how you can be right in the action here.
