San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity (SGV Habitat) is once again accepting applications for their affordable homeownership program.

Applicants must be first-time homebuyers, demonstrate a need for affordable housing, have the ability to pay an affordable mortgage, and be able to complete all program requirements. Selected homebuyers will complete 100 sweat equity hours per adult member of their household alongside volunteers and also attend approximately 50 hours of homebuyer education courses prior to purchase. These unique requirements have resulted in a 100% success rate (no foreclosures or defaults) to date for all current SGV Habitat homeowners.

“We are so happy to be creating transformational opportunities for families and individuals to become first-time homebuyers at a time when the pandemic has exacerbated housing instability for people throughout our region,” says Mark Van Lue, executive director of SGV Habitat.

Online pre-applications will be accepted throughout the entire month of April. The last day to submit a pre-application is April 30, 2021.

Approved homebuyers will qualify for a monthly housing payment equal to 30% of their gross monthly income at the time of purchase. This low monthly payment will provide families with the financial stability necessary to create generational wealth — something the average low-income renter lacks due to a high cost of living in California that has only worsened since the pandemic.

“Owning a home in these uncertain times has provided stability for our children. Within the walls of our home, our children experience safety. This is a gift beyond measure,” says Macha, current Habitat homeowner in Pasadena.
