Faces 109 Years in Jail; Bail Set at $2.5 Million
On Jan. 15th 2015, at about 6:00 a.m., Pasadena Police officers responded to the 500 block of Marengo Avenue regarding a call of shots fired at an inhabited dwelling — no one was hit by the suspect’s gunfire. The preliminary investigation was handled by patrol officers and subsequently assigned to Detective Anthony Russo, who believed the shooting was gang related. With the assistance of gang officers assigned to the Special Enforcement Section (SES), Anthony subsequently identified Kefvon Camp, an admitted local gang member, as the suspect in the shooting.
On March 26, Camp was arrested in Altadena without incident through the combined efforts of Pasadena Police detectives, SES, WSGATF, and Los Angeles County Probation. Search warrants were simultaneously served at multiple locations and evidence related to the crime was recovered.
On April 1, Detective Russo presented his case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, Hardcore/Gang Division. The following charges were filed against Camp: two counts of attempted murder; shooting at an inhabited dwelling with Special allegations (gang enhancements; personal use of a handgun; prior strike offense). Suspect Camp’s bail was set at over 2.5 million and the combined charges carry a maximum sentence of 109 years to life.
This case was very complex and required hundreds of investigative hours over many months to identify Camp as the shooter. It underscores the experience of Detective Russo and many other dedicated and knowledgeable first responders, including: Sergeants Lemos, Aguilar, and Kirby; Detectives Torres, Burris, Campeau, Duran, Bundy, Granados, Carter, Ontiveros, Murphy, and SES Officers Ling, Garcia, and White; the West San Gabriel Anti-Crime Task Force; and Los Angeles County Probation Agent Leo Paredes. The investigation was supervised by Lieutenant Rojas and Sergeant Lemos.
