YWCA Pasadena has received a generous $14,500 grant from the Water Buffalo Club in support of their Girls Empowerment Programs. This grant was provided to the YWCA Pasadena to purchase a new van to replace an 18-year-old van which was used to transport program participants for the after-school program, field trips, and excursions during summer camp. The new Chevrolet Express van was purchased at JStar Auto Group with attentive service and assistance from salesman Luke Jiles.

This new van will be used throughout YWCA’s Girls Empowerment Programs to transport participants. It is an essential service for many of the after-school program girls who do not have transportation to the program from school. The YWCA’s vans travel over 30 miles every program day to ensure that girls are able to attend regardless of their parent’s availability or mobility.

During the summer, the YWCA also use the vans to transport girls to field trips and opportunities in the Pasadena area for the Girls Rise Leadership Camp, such as tours at CalTech and Pasadena City College, workshops at the Huntington Library and Gardens, cultural excursions to museums such as the Getty Villa and California African-American Museum, as well as hiking, swimming, roller skating, and other fun activities throughout the local area.

This kind and generous gift from the Water Buffalo club will allow girls from a wider area to take advantage of the programs available at the YWCA, and will help the YWCA expand its programming capability.

The YWCA’s Girls Empowerment Afterschool Program is a free multi-disciplinary afterschool program for girls ages 10 to 14. Registration is open on a rolling basis from October through May. Activities include science experiments, robotics, 3D printing and design, html coding, painting, drawing, screen-printing, creative writing, conflict resolution, mindfulness, community service projects, and more.
