Wednesday evening Clifton Middle School underwent a “deep cleaning” after a Clifton Middle School parent who works in the health industry had been in contact with an individual who had been exposed to COVID-19, the illness caused by the novel coronavirus.

According to a statement from Monrovia Unified School District (MUSD), neither the parent nor their children have shown any of the symptoms associated with coronavirus. Out of an abundance of caution, the parent and their children are self-isolating through the end of the illness’ incubation period of 14 days.

The school was operating as usual Thursday morning — though there were several news vans and cameras outside.

MUSD is updating protocols and preparing plans for virtual learning in the event of a prolonged emergency of any kind, including COVID-19, according to a statement issued Wednesday before news of the developments at Clifton became public knowledge. The district is also developing strategies for providing age-appropriate, remote lessons to students, taking accessibility into consideration, as well as tools for staying connected as a community should it become necessary.

Los Angeles County declared a state of emergency on Wednesday as a proactive step to more effectively prepare to respond to COVID-19. MUSD is working with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health in a coordinated effort to address the many issues that COVID-19 presents.
