Monrovia Duarte Black Alumni Associate Hosts Events for Black History Month

February is Black History Month and the Monrovia Duarte Black Alumni Associate (MDBAA) has a list of events to celebrate.

Take for example, a luncheon this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Monrovia Community Center, 119 W. Palm Ave. The Church Boys will perform and, Eugene Washington and Martin A. Gordon will be the speakers at the event. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased through Eventbrite.

MDBAA, in partnership with Monrovia Public Library, will host “Black History Celebration” on Feb. 22 from 1-4 p.m. at 321 S. Myrtle Ave. Celebrations will include a Rhythms of the Village Production featuring with Nigerian storyteller Onochie Chukwrah with drummers and dancers, arts and crafts, and a Readers Theatre presentation of “Papa’s Mark.”

Rounding out the festivities will be an art festival celebrating African American history. Monrovia Unified School District is holding a Black History Month Art Festival in partnership with the Monrovia Duarte Black Alumni Association.

Elementary students are given the opportunity to display their art pieces that celebrate the month. 

Everyone is invited to join in on the celebration and appreciate the art presented. It will take place from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 20 at Monrovia High School, 845 W. Colorado Blvd., Monrovia. The art exhibit will be held in room 210.
