Special Community Meeting Scheduled to Discuss Enhancements to Monrovia’s Lucinda Garcia Park

The City of Monrovia will host a community meeting at 9 a.m. on June 15 at Lucinda Garcia Park (502 W. Olive Ave., Monrovia) to discuss possible updates it the city is given grant funding by the state.

In response to the state of California issuing a notice of funding availability via Proposition 68, Monrovia city staff has prepared a grant application which would fund improvements to Lucinda Garcia Park. If awarded the grant, the following updates are under considerations to return the park into a premier amenity:

  • Park expansion.
  • Play equipment replacement and upgrades.
  • Exercise circuit equipment installation.
  • Pathway repairs.
  • Monument sign improvements.

As part of the grant writing process, city staff hosted an outreach event at the park on May 30 to garner feedback from Monroe Elementary families. Approximately 24 families (50 individuals) participated and all were enthusiastic about possible renovations. Many suggested updating the playground with slides, monkey bars, swings for bigger children, safer playground surfacing, smooth walking paths and new drinking fountains.

Staff will also coordinate additional community outreach. On Saturday, June 8 staff will go door to door inviting residents living adjacent to Lucinda Garcia Park to the June 15 meeting and gathering feedback. On Thursday, June 13, at 6 p.m., staff will be hosting a special meeting of the Community Services Commission at Lucinda Garcia Park, which will give the Commission an opportunity to walk the park and provide feedback to staff as it relates to the proposed enhancements.
