A 52-year-old man was sentenced to 46 years to life in state prison for the domestic violence murder of his girlfriend, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

On May 12, a jury found Joel Velazquez of Valinda, guilty of one count of voluntary manslaughter. Case GA094662 was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Lisa Tanner. The victim, identified on the complaint as Alice Marie M., was strangled by Velasquez on Sept. 21, 2014. Her body was later discovered inside an SUV parked behind a house owned by her parents on the 200 block of Mauna Loa Drive in Monrovia, prosecutors said. The case was investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Homicide Division.
