Seniors publicly announce the name of the university they will attend in the fall

Recently, the San Gabriel Valley region of Opportunities for Learning Public Charter Schools held their Senior Signing Day at the Monrovian Restaurant.

The San Gabriel Valley of Opportunities for Learning region consists of 5 school sites – City of Industry, Duarte, Pasadena, Irwindale and West Covina. In total, 15 graduating seniors signed letters of intent to attend UC Riverside, CSU Humboldt, CSU Los Angeles, CSU San Bernardino, CSU San Francisco, Cal Poly Pomona, the University of La Verne, and the University of Pittsburgh.

“I’ve always been close with my family and have never been apart from them, so I am interested to see how I’ll be as an independent person living on campus. I’m really looking forward to new experiences,” said John Medina, who signed with CSU San Bernardino.

Senior Signing Day is a celebration of students who have been accepted to four year universities. With their families and teachers watching, each student gave a short speech about their educational journey and then publicly announced the name of the university they will be attending in the fall. Principal Richard Moreno and Student Advisors, Lucia Covarrubias and Daisy Hernandez then congratulated the students, recognized their hard work, and gave them words of advice and encouragement.

“Senior Signing Day is important because it gives students an opportunity to celebrate their accomplishments with peers, parents, and teachers,” said Principal Moreno. He continued “Every year parents tell us how much they’ve enjoyed the day, and our staff looks forward to it because events like this remind us why we do the job we do.”
