August Event Already has a Waiting List
By Susan Motander
Not even the rain could dampen the spirits of the happy campers in Monrovia Canyon Park last weekend at the season’s first family hike and campout event.
The second campout, scheduled for August 13 to 14, is already booked to capacity and a waiting list has been established.
The two-day event included two separate hikes (one in the early evening), a campfire complete with toasted marshmallows and s’mores, and a pancake breakfast on Sunday morning, prepared over a barbeque by members of the Monrovia Fire Department.
The firefighters, including Interim Chief Brad Dover who brought his son Blake along, were greeted early Sunday morning, by excited youngsters and slightly bleary-eyed parents.
The challenge of cooking over an open flame was a new experience for some of the firefighters, including brand new Fire Cadet Dino Housos (who was on his first day on-the-job), to whom all the grunge chores were assigned.
The youngest campers, especially Kenji Cariaga, 4, seemed to appreciate the Mickey Mouse pancakes even more than the sausage with its slightly “smokey” overlay.
Kenji and his older brother, Koichi, 7, both of Monrovia, were camping along with their parents and 12 other families.
Koichi said his two favorite parts of the weekend event were: the night hike and getting to eat Cheetos with his pancakes and sausage for breakfast.
