On Saturday, Feb. 20, the Monrovia Public Library introduced Harriet Glickman, the former teacher who helped create Franklin Armstrong, the first African-American Peanuts character. In1968, shortly after the death of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Glickman wrote a letter to Charles Schulz requesting that he include an African-American child in the comic strip. She was at the library to share her experience. Her talk was followed by a showing of the 1977 movie, “Race for Your Life, Charlie Brown” featuring Charlie Brown’s best friend Franklin and all the Peanuts gang.
