The Arcadia High girls’ tennis team went undefeated in the Pacific League after beating Glendale 18-0, ending the season with an overall score of 17-0 and 12-0 in league play.
The team is led by Captain Angelica Zhou, who indicated that they do not feel pressured during the league matches and are confident that they will continue to win. She also said that the team is preparing for the California Interscholastic Federation Girls Tennis Playoff, also known as CIF, by forming strong team chemistry.
A typical high school tennis game has 18 sets. There are 6 matches per round, with 3 doubles and 3 singles per round rotating three times in one game. Whoever wins the most sets wins the game. For every game Arcadia has won, the team has won with more than 16 sets. They have only lost 2 sets while playing against Ayala High School and Pasadena High School. That being said, they have beaten many incredible schools, including Crescenta Valley High School, Burbank High School, and Temple City High School by 17 sets.
Coach Bo Win Tin, who has been leading the Apaches Boys’ and Girls’ Tennis Teams for three years, said that in order to prepare for CIF and the State Championships, he will be telling the Girls to play against the Boys. He believes that if the Girls’ Team has never had the experience of facing a tough team, they will not understand how it feels to lose a couple of games.
Last week the Apaches Girls’ Tennis Team swept the Pacific League Girls Tennis Finals. They secured the top four spots for singles and the top three spots for doubles. Michelle Deng finished first in the singles competition, and Rachelle Yang and Angelica Zhou finished first in the doubles competition.
This week, they will be playing in the second division CIF playoffs. CIF ranks Arcadia High School in second, after Valencia High School Girls Tennis, which won last year’s second division CIF crown. Good luck to the Apaches Varsity Girls’ Tennis Team.
