Stats Floral Supply, also referred to as “Stats,” is a multi-faceted store that was established more than 50 years ago by Dan Stathatos in Old Town Pasadena. Originally just a floral supply shop, the location now holds four additional shops known as “Shoppes at Stats.” The idea of diversifying Stats by introducing new stores within its walls was introduced by the founder’s son, Damon Stathatos, in 2013. Since then, Stathatos, who is a partner and the general manager of Stats, has opened “The Old Town Shaving Company,” “The Bea’s Knees Wine Cheese and Gifts,” “Sierra Madre Sawing & Milling,” and “J. Verne & Co.”
Damon Stathatos’ father Dan was tired of working long hours as a florist in downtown Los Angeles and decided to open his own floral supply shop in 1962. At the time, downtown LA was the only place where people could purchase floristry-related materials. With this in mind, the owner attempted to shortstop florists who were traveling east of LA by opening his shop in Pasadena. The attempt proved to be a success as Stats later grew into a well-known florist shop that now includes Shoppes at Stats.
As a primary florist supply store, Stats carries various materials relating to floristry, including home décor and seasonal merchandise. Some of the store’s most popular items stem from Stats’ tradition of offering one of the widest selections of Christmas decorations. “It’ like a Disneyland type of experience … people come from all around every year,” said Stathatos. Since diversifying the store with Shoppes at Stats in 2013, it now offers numerous products pertaining to the genre of each shop. For instance, due to the addition of The Old Town Shaving Company, Stats now carries a wide selection of gentlemen’s European style shaving supplies. The Bea’s Knees Wine Cheese and Gifts makes gourmet food, wine, and unique kitchen items available for Stats customers as well. Craftsman supplies are also offered at Sierra Madre Sawing & Milling, and one-of-a-kind steampunk art décor, and vapor smoke components at J. Verne & Co.
Introducing the concept of Shoppes at Stats was a challenge at first because some customers had the misconception that the new shops were replacing Stats. However, by having quality merchandise, great customer service, and the most complete selection of different products, Stats has managed to retain both old and new customers.
Stats’ target market has expanded over the years from homeowners who delight in home décor to a wide range of men and women who enjoy anything from gourmet food to unique craftsmen supplies. Stats’ target market will most likely continue to broaden as additional stores are integrated into Shoppes at Stats.
Regardless of the many unique shops Stathatos envisions incorporating, customers can still expect Stats’ end-of-the-year tradition. “We’re going to continue to retain the annual Disneyland Christmas component; that’s not going to change,” said Stathatos.
