Thursday Matt Denny’s Ale House Restaurant held thier 13th St. Baldrick’s Day Fundraiser to benefit children’s cancer research. Over 150 men, women and children shaved their heads to show solidarity for the children that lose their hair during cancer treatment. Several firefighters including Beth Fournier who cut off her long hair in solidarity with a friend who is fighting cancer. Also on deck for a head shave was Diane Sands of Sierra Madre, supported by husband Jeff.  Hundreds actually participated this year raising vast sums of money which is still being counted as we post this story. One of Beacon Media’s salespeople also shaved his head, Jose Luis Correa rooted on by his family.

What started as a challenge among friends in the reinsurance industry in New York to raise $17,000 by shaving 17 heads has generated over $200 million in donations since its inception. “This has been a great way to show support for the kids, and raise much-needed funds for cancer research,” says Matt McSweeny. The Arcadia event has raised over S450,000 in 12 years of sponsoring this one-of-a-kind celebration. Many members of the Arcadia Fire and Police Departments, along with local schools, teams and others who want to help find a cure for children’s cancer, will shave their locks on the 19th.
The St. Baldrick’s Day Fundraiser draws attention to childhood cancer research. More children die each year of cancer than any other childhood disease. Del Sol Salon stylists of Arcadia volunteered their time and talents one again.
