Monrovia City Clerk hosts meeting for potential candidates

By Susan Motander

Monrovia will hold its Municipal elections on April 14 next year. Two city council seats and the mayor’s position are up for election. Alice Atkins, City Clerk, is holding a meeting for all potential candidates on December 9 at 6 at the Monrovia Community Center, 119 West Palm Avenue.
“I began this candidate information meeting several years ago in an effort to raise awareness about what it means to be a candidate so that people weren’t blind-sided when they came to pull nomination papers,” said Atkins. “Hopefully this meeting demystifies the process a bit.”
The meeting, which is not mandatory, but strongly suggested for potential candidates, will include information on the necessary forms to file, the campaign reporting requirements and important deadlines.
Nominating papers may be filed starting on December 22 and must be filed by January 16, 2015. The candidates meeting is open to anyone interested in running for local government in any city or those who merely wish to learn more about the process. One need not be a Monrovia resident to attend the meeting; however, Monrovia residency is required to run for office.
Mayor Mary Ann Lutz and Council Member Becky Shevlin have indicated to this paper that they will be running for re-election. Council Member Tom Adams said that he has not yet made a decision about running. “I am mulling over my choices,” Adams said.
