City of Hope among the top 25 cancer hospitals in the nation for 2012 by U.S.News & World Report

City of Hope is ranked as the 23rd best cancer hospital in the nation in U.S.News & World Report’s 2012-13 Best Hospitals report. City of Hope also nationally rated as “high-performing” in urology, gynecology and nephrology specialties.

“The nation’s health care system is undergoing significant changes with a greater emphasis on patient outcomes, and our recognition as one of U.S. News’ Best Cancer Hospitals reflects our ongoing efforts to deliver the best patient care possible,” said Michael A. Friedman, M.D., president and chief executive officer, City of Hope, and Irell & Manella Cancer Center Director’s Distinguished Chair. “City of Hope brings together scientific discovery, advanced technology and compassionate care that addresses the whole patient, not just the disease.”

This marks the institution’s ninth year on the top cancer hospitals list. City of Hope is one of fewer than 150 medical centers to appear on the national list. Hospitals are selected from nearly 5,000 eligible hospitals nationwide in 16 specialty areas. According to California’s Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development, City of Hope is the fourth largest provider of cancer care in the state, and the second leading provider in Southern California. The institution has the state’s largest programs in hematology, and prostate and breast cancer.

City of Hope is one of only 41 institutions in the nation to be designated as a comprehensive cancer center by the National Cancer Institute. To earn this elite designation, a center must undergo a rigorous peer-review process, maintain a significant base of individually funded research projects and be heavily involved in community outreach, as well as meet other academic and public service requirements.
