If trying to beat the heat this summer is significantly increasing utility bills, the Efficient San Gabriel Valley program offers free home energy reviews for residents.
The eSGV program by the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments offers free evaluations to identify ways to save both energy and money.
Officials said the appointments include a 30- to 45-minute discussion with SGVCOG staff, who use a “whole house approach” to identify things that need improvement and determine eligibility for available financial rebates. Information from the discussion with residents enables energy-usage experts to create a free personalized report.
SGVCOG offers the program in partnership with the Southern California Regional Energy Network, or SoCalREN to help homeowners and tenants in rental units identify opportunities to improve their home’s energy efficiency while connecting them with rebates, incentive programs and other resources, officials said.
During the energy assessment, SoCalREN staff members review areas that include:
- building materials;
- heating and cooling systems;
- lighting;
- kitchen and laundry appliances;
- home and office electronics;
- indoor and outdoor watering; and
- available rebates, incentives and energy-saving programs.
When the assessment is complete, residents will receive a customized action plan within seven days that recommends improvements, available rebates and resources to help homeowners or renters start energy-efficiency projects.
Improving a home’s energy efficiency can reduce electricity and natural gas consumption, reduce monthly utility bills and make it easier to maintain comfortable indoor temperatures year-round, according to the SGVCOG.
To participate in the program, residents schedule a free in-person or virtual assessment, then meet with an energy efficiency specialist who will evaluate a home’s energy usage and provide an action plan toward better efficiency.
To schedule an assessment, visit sgvcog.org/eSGV or call 626-457-1800. For questions, officials said to email eSGV@sgvcog.org.
