A brush fire in the Antelope Valley near the Los Angeles and San Bernardino County line was at 2,690 acres with no further growth expected, firefighters said Monday.
The Summit Fire was 31% contained after it was initially reported at around 12:50 p.m. Friday near Jesus Canyon Road and East Avenue Z in the Llano area west of Piñon Hills, according to Cal Fire.
“Although Summit Fire crews have stopped forward progress and are holding containment lines steady … evacuation warnings remain in effect … and road closures will stay in place until further notice,” Cal Fire officials said in a statement Monday morning.
Crews will be working amid an excessive heat warning for the area issued Monday morning. The National Weather Service forecast temperatures surpassing 110 degrees and winds of 5 to 7 mph.
Forward progress was stopped at 2,690 acres Sunday as containment grew to 31% and the single evacuation order was lifted after being in effect for the area near East Avenue Z and Fort Tejon Road. Evacuation warnings were issued in other nearby locations as the fire spread into the Angeles National Forest toward San Bernardino County.
Evacuation warnings were in place Monday for two areas between Angeles Crest Highway and state Route 138 on the eastern edge of LA County, west of Piñon Hills.
“This cautious approach ensures public and crew safety amid incoming winds, potential interior fire behavior, and a heavy presence of emergency vehicles,” according to Cal Fire.
“While all evacuation orders were downgraded Sunday and no further fire growth is expected, active winds mean residents may still see localized smoke and brief interior flare-ups well within the established burn area,” Cal Fire’s statement added.
Damage inspectors were accessing cleared zones Monday to verify counts of damaged structures, officials said.
The fire has destroyed two structures, damaged five and caused one firefighter injury, Cal Fire reported.
Officials are investigating the fire’s cause.
