A power outage affecting the Los Angeles County Sheriffs’ Department’s 911 system ended around 7:20 a.m. Friday, while the outage’s full impact remained unknown.
At approximately 6:02 p.m. Thursday, the department received word of an outage affecting the Vesta System, a third-party platform that handles calls for public service agencies. The disruption impacted 911 calls within the LASD’s jurisdiction, according to a department statement.
In response to the outage, 911 calls were redirected to patrol station business phone lines to help avoid lapses in emergency response coverage, the department said.
“The Sheriff’s Department has deployed Department electricians to assess and address the issue and are working closely with the third-party telecommunications provider to restore full service as quickly as possible,” said the LASD in a statement that initially reported the outage. “We appreciate the community’s understanding and want to reassure our residents that we are taking all necessary steps to maintain emergency response services while this issue is being resolved.”
Around 3 a.m., the Vesta System began coming back online and at approximately 7:20 a.m., 911 service was fully restored at all Sheriff’s Department patrol stations, officials reported.
The Vesta System is not owned or maintained by the Sheriff’s Department, and LASD personnel are working with the company to determine the root cause of the outage and identify corrective measures to help prevent reoccurrence, officials said.
