The arrival of the Year of the Horse begins Jan. 31 at the Monterey Park Lunar New Year Festival.
The Saturday event from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 1, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. takes place in downtown Monterey Park on Garvey Avenue between Garfield and Alhambra avenues. Admission is free.
“Monterey Park’s Lunar New Year festival features vendors offering unique gifts and specialty items, food booths with various types of items, amusement rides and lots of live entertainment,” according to organizers.
Entertainment includes the traditional New Year lion and dragon dancers, who will kick off the festival Saturday morning. A variety of entertaining acts will perform on both days, along with a carnival fun zone in the parking lot at Garvey and Lincoln avenues.
Previous Lunar New Year festivals in Monterey Park have brought thousands of visitors from around the world. The event is presented by the city, Monterey Park Downtown Business Improvement District Advisory Committee and World Journal LA.
Free parking and shuttle bus service is available. Round trip pick-up and drop-off shuttle service Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at:
- Barnes Park, 350 S. McPherrin Ave. in Monterey Park — no shuttle, free parking only;
- Langley Center, 400 W. Emerson Ave. in Monterey Park — no shuttle, free parking;
- Mark Keppel High School, 501 E. Hellman Ave. in Alhambra — drop off at 7-Eleven parking lot on Alhambra Avenue.
- Repetto Elementary School, 650 Grandridge Ave. in Monterey Park — drop off at Lincoln Hotel parking lot behind the hotel on Garfield Avenue; and
- Ynez Elementary School, 120 S. Ynez Ave. in Monterey Park — no shuttle, free parking only.
