This groundbreaking twist on “The Wizard of Oz” changed the face of Broadway—from its score packed with soul, gospel, rock, and ‘70s funk to its stirring tale of Dorothy’s journey to find her place in a contemporary world. Family Fest — The Wallis is celebrating Lunar New Year (the year of the horse) on Saturday, January 17 with a free outdoor festival celebration from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the grounds of the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts. The entire family is invited admission free to this event filled with activities, festive music, dance, and foods inspired by this rich cultural tradition.

Family Fest comes alive with the sights, sounds, and traditions of the Chinese New Year, also known as Spring Festival. From colorful traditions and lively performances to immersive arts and crafts and fun activities, there’s something for everyone to explore. Whether making a lucky lantern, making music, or simply soaking up the festive atmosphere, it’s the perfect way to start the year together.

“The Great Race” — That same day in the indoor Lovelace Studio Theatre, paired with the Family Fest Lunar New Year, The Wallis presents “The Great Race” by the Honolulu Theatre for Youth telling the story of the Chinese Zodiac, directed and written by Reiko Ho. “The Great Race” is a ticketed performance with all seats priced at $20.  For information and tickets for “The Great Race,” visit www.thewallis.org.

The show weaves a family celebration of Lunar New Year with a retelling of one of the most beloved tales in Chinese folklore. Through traditional movement, music, and martial arts, the audience learns how each animal earned its place in the 12-year cycle. When the Jade Emperor needs a way to tell time, he decrees that there will be a Great Race. The first twelve animals to cross the mighty river will have a year named after them. This 12-year cycle will mark the passage of time. Which animals win the race? What are the traits that help them cross the river? This re-telling of one of the most beloved tales in Chinese folklore features traditional Chinese music, Jingju and martial arts.

The evening includes Balanchine’s jazz-infused delight “Rubies”—an energetic reprise from LAB’s first-ever season. Hans Van Manen’s “Frank Bridge Variations” pairs Benjamin Britten’s lush score with an abstract expression of sensuality and, at times, explosive emotion. It is a powerful blend of classicism, spirited wit, and modern intensity.

Compagnie Hervé Koubi: “Sol Invictus”

With their show “Sol Invictus,” Compagnie Hervé Koubi delivers a baroque dreamscape. Muscular and sublime, the dancers move through light and shadow, echoing the chiaroscuro of Caravaggio and the raw physicality of street dance.

Koubi is known for his fusion of classical dance, capoeira, hip-hop, and martial arts. He draws on these influences and his French-Algerian roots to gather a collective of dancers from across the Mediterranean. They unite to explore resilience.

Named for the ancient Roman “Unconquered Sun” deity, Sol Invictus is a call for unity. “Here,” says Koubi, “sun and dance will emerge victorious.”

“Spamalot,” which first galloped onto Broadway in 2005, features a book and lyrics by Eric Idle and music by John Du Prez and Eric Idle. The original Broadway production was nominated for fourteen Tony Awards and won three, including Best Musical. The musical comedy, lovingly ripped off from the film classic “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” has everything that makes a great knight at the theatre, from flying cows to killer rabbits, British royalty to French taunters, dancing girls, rubbery shrubbery, and of course, the Lady of the Lake. 

Patti LuPone “Matters of the Heart”

There are Broadway stars, and then there is Patti LuPone. She is, of course, a three-time Tony Award winner for her performances as Joanne in Marianne Elliott’s award-winning production of the Stephen Sondheim-George Furth musical “Company,” Madame Rose in the 2008 Broadway revival of the Jule Styne-Stephen Sondheim-Arthur Laurents classic “Gypsy” and the title role in the original Broadway production of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s “Evita.”

In “Matters of the Heart,” LuPone takes the audience on an exploration of the crimes, affairs and the mysteries of the heart, with performances of over two dozen love songs ranging from Broadway favorites to works by today’s top contemporary songwriters.

Norbert Leo Butz is a two-time Tony Award winner for Best Actor in a Musical and is one of only nine actors ever to have won the award twice as lead actor. In this special evening of story and song, Butz sings highlights from his storied three decades on the boards of Broadway – from his humble beginning as the 7th of 11 children to his Tony triumphs and everything in between.

“The Adding Machine”

The Actors’ Gang then presents a new production of Elmer Rice’s 1923 “The Adding Machine,” directed by Cihan Sahin. The play is a classic that warns of and satirizes the future we find ourselves currently living in. The central character, Mr. Zero, an oppressed and abused ‘wage-slave,’ has been fired after a quarter century of loyal service as a bookkeeper. He has been replaced by an adding machine. Zero snaps and murders his boss; then tried, found guilty, and executed. Act two finds him in the stand-in for Heaven, Elysian Fields, where he operates an even larger computer (with his big toe), recording the output of downtrodden miners – until he is told that he is a waste of space and sent back to Earth for re-use.

“Kim’s Convenience” began life as a play when it originally premiered in 2011 at the Toronto Fringe Festival. “Kim’s Convenience” became a very popular television series that ran for five seasons on CBC Television and Netflix. In “Kim’s Convenience,” Mr. Kim works hard to support his wife and children with his Toronto convenience store. As he evaluates his future, he faces both a changing neighborhood landscape and the gap between his values and those of his Canada-born son and daughter. Playwright Ins Choi calls “Kim’s Convenience” his “love letter to his parents and to all first-generation immigrants who call Canada their home.”
