Monrovia Old Town report: Netflix and chill?

More like trail mix and hill. At the July 1 City Council meeting, July was proclaimed “Parks Make Life Better” month. I am quite sure this is a true proclamation, but why not put it to the test this month? We have nine parks in Monrovia: Julian Fisher, Kiwanis, Library, Lucinda Garcia, Canyon, Recreation, Rotary, Station Square, and Evergreen Plaza. Once the construction of Satoru Tsuneishi is finished, we’ll have 10 parks. All of these parks are beautiful. Some are better for exercising, some for playing, some for getting closer to nature, some for relaxing with a delightful book or a picnic. Summer is the perfect time to test this theory.

Start by attending one of our concerts in the park. The remaining summer concerts will be held at Library Park every Sunday through Aug. 10 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. featuring country, Latin, top 40, Motown, and more. Pack a picnic, a blanket, or chairs and enjoy a lovely summer evening under the trees with great music. It’s a lot of fun!

You can also visit the city’s website or grab your current edition of Monrovia Today, to find some fun activities to sign up for.

Now that Canyon Park is open, I highly recommend you take some time to visit. It is truly spectacular. It fills you with peace and happiness as soon as you arrive. Enjoy a nice hike to the waterfall or take part in some self-care at the meditation platform. It is a gorgeous place to spend time, no matter what you do. Maybe we can get Parks and Rec to install some hammocks?

It is starting to heat up outside. Do your heavy lifting earlier or later in the day. Drink plenty of water and wear loose-fitting layers. Be mindful of your pets and their paws. Also, be mindful of your children. Obviously, do not leave your furry children or your human children in parked cars. Aim for shady activities and lots of sunscreen. Be on the lookout for heavy sweating, cramps, nausea, dizziness, headaches, or weakness. If necessary, cool your kiddos off in a cool bath and give them fluids. It would also be nice if you could check on your elderly neighbors.

If you are a fan of The Pour House, this is their last weekend open. Their doors will shutter permanently, come July 15. No word yet on who will be moving in. If I had to guess, I would say the landlord will gut the space and leave it as a blank canvas for someone to lease. Perhaps retail, which seems to be on the uptick, or office space. Word on the street is that the Pour House will be having a going-out-of-business party on July 12. I wish them well on whatever path they take next. More importantly, I wish them strength, fortitude, and positive healing energy during their current health challenges.
