Cats found living in extremely unsanitary conditions inside a stolen U-Haul van in Monrovia last week were recovering Thursday, with some ready for adoption, Pasadena Humane announced.
Monrovia police discovered the 19 adult cats after responding to a call about the stolen vehicle, which was towed. Officers found the cats surrounded by feces, maggots and debris, officials said.
Pasadena Humane staff were asked to assess the animals and transport them to the shelter at 361 S. Raymond Ave. in Pasadena.

“While the cats were quite anxious from the experience, they were otherwise mostly in good health,” according to a Pasadena Humane statement. “We provided them with any necessary medical care along with a safe and comfortable space where they could rest and recover.”
Several of the rescued cats are healthy and ready for adoption, officials said. Adoption hours at the shelter are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
“These cats have already overcome so much, and they are ready to find homes where they can feel safe and loved,” the Pasadena Humane statement said.
