On Friday, a student on-campus at Centennial High School in Corona was found in possession of a handgun and ammunition.
A Corona-Norco Unified School District (CNUSD) contracted vendor was conducting unannounced searches of the school campus using narcotic and contraband detection canines. A canine alerted on a student’s backpack and a search of the backpack revealed a handgun. The firearm was unloaded, but next to it was a loaded magazine.
The Corona Police Department has full-time school resource officers at all high school campuses and an officer was onsite during the canine search. The officer arrested the student, called for additional resources, and they initiated a School Threat Assessment and Response (STAR) Protocol investigation.
The student’s parents consented to a search of their residence, where officers did not locate any other contraband. The student was later transported to Riverside Juvenile Hall.
