San Bernardino city crew removes encampment near Baseline Street
Outreach workers and personnel from several San Bernardino city agencies Thursday removed an encampment from an alley near Baseline Street, officials announced.
The encampment was near the intersection of Baseline and D streets, adjacent to a commercial center that once included a Smart and Final grocery store, according to the city.
The removal is the fourth encampment cleanup following a federal court’s ruling in October that lifted an injunction against the city prohibiting cleanups. Previous encampment removals occurred at Perris Hill, Wildwood and Bobby Vega parks.
According to city officials, tents in the encampment “blocked vehicle and public access to the alley, encroached upon private property and the accumulated trash posed a significant health hazard.”
The cleanup crew at the Baseline Street alley included Salvation Army outreach workers and personnel from San Bernardino Public Works, the city’s Housing and Homelessness Division, police officers and Burrtec, the city’s trash hauler, officials said.
The encampment removal followed more than a week of outreach efforts, in which the people living in the alley were visited by city, county, and nonprofit outreach workers who sought to connect them with services and housing opportunities, according to the city. The encampment residents received advance notice that the removal would take place, officials added.
During the removal effort, city staff members assisted the individuals who remained in the encampment to decide which items they would take with them, which items were garbage and which possessions they wanted to have the city store for as many as 90 days.
“Quite a few of the individual residents were willing to accept services offered by the City, County, and its non-profit partners, including the Salvation Army,” according to a city statement.
More encampment removals will occur “in the near future,” officials said.
