

Malcolm Smith, the motorsports icon and founder of Malcolm Smith Motorsports in Riverside, died Nov. 26 in his Riverside home at the age of 83 from Parkinson’s disease complications, according to his company’s Facebook page. He is survived by his wife Joyce, daughters Louise and Ashley, sons Joel and Alexander, granddaughters Evie, Adeline, Amelie, Miley and Claire, and grandsons Ethan, Malcolm and Conrad.
A native of British Columbia, Smith began racing in Moreno Valley in 1956. As a competitive racer, he won the Baja 1000 six times, the Baja 500 four times, the Mint 400 two times, and won eight gold medals at the International Six Day Trials in Europe.
Smith founded Malcolm Smith Motorsports in 1967. Located near the Riverside Auto Center, the shop sells ATVs, motorcycles, dirt bikes, watercraft and other types of vehicles.
In 1971 he went on to be feature in the racing documentary “On Any Sunday” with Steve McQueen.
After retiring in 2014, his son Alexander and daughter Ashley took over operations of Malcolm Smith Motorsports.
In lieu of flowers, the family requested that donations be made to Malcolm’s favorite charity, the Malcolm Smith Motorsports Foundation, which supports the children of Baja.
