Duarte to host its first Día de los Muertos event
Duarte has scheduled its inaugural Día de los Muertos Day of the Dead celebration for Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the City Hall Courtyard, 1600 Huntington Drive.
The family-friendly event invites attendees young and old to honor the memory of loved ones who have passed away and celebrate with the local community through the rich traditions of this key Mexican holiday, city officials said.
Día de los Muertos has roots in the ancient Aztec culture as well as Catholicism and is a time to joyfully remember and pay homage to those who have died. Unlike traditional mourning practices, the day is marked by “vibrant color, life and celebration,” according to a city statement.
The event in Duarte will feature a ceremonial altar on which residents can put photos of their loved ones, live performances, authentic Mexican food and activities that accentuate the holiday’s history and culture.
“Día de los Muertos holds deep meaning for many. It is a privilege to bring this celebration to Duarte,” Duarte Mayor Vinh Truong said in a statement. “It is an opportunity to remember our loved ones, reflect on our shared humanity and embrace the cultural diversity that makes our city so special.”
The event will also have displays of traditional art, interactive activities and a Catrina costume contest that will bring to life the folkloric, iconic Día de los Muertos figures.
