Part of the 10 Freeway in El Monte will be closed this weekend requiring detours, the California Department of Transportation announced Friday.

The extended weekend closure on eastbound Interstate 10 from Rosemead Boulevard to Baldwin Avenue will begin Friday night/Saturday morning, Oct. 12 at 12:01 a.m. and is scheduled to end Sunday at 11:59 p.m.

The closure allows crews to safely work on the median barrier, according to Caltrans.

The HOV lane will be closed and up to three lanes will be open for vehicle traffic, the eastbound and westbound El Monte Transit Center off-ramp will be closed, as will the westbound Transit Center on-ramp.

The eastbound Transit Center off-ramp detour is an exit at the Baldwin Avenue off-ramp to go north on Baldwin, then east on Valley Boulevard and south on Santa Anita Avenue to the El Monte Transit Center.

The westbound Transit Center on-ramp detour is to travel south on Santa Anita Avenue to the I-10 westbound on-ramp.

The freeway closure is part of a $15.2 million project to increase the concrete barrier height to meet current design standards at 23 locations along I-10 between the 605 and 710 freeways, Caltrans reported.

Closures are weather-permitting and subject to change, officials said. Motorists should expect delays and should take alternate routes during construction work.

Residents and businesses situated near the freeway were advised to expect noise, vibrations and dust from the construction work.
