On Friday, officials provided an exciting update on the Los Angeles 2028 Summer Olympics, revealing the proposed venue plan for the Olympic and Paralympic games.
“The Olympic and Paralympic Games represent the pinnacle of athletic competition and achievement, and we’re proud to host the Los Angeles 2028 Games in some of the greatest stadiums and arenas ever built,” remarked Casey Wasserman, LA28 Chairperson and President, in a press release. “LA28’s updated venue plan will provide the ideal Hollywood stage for the world’s top athletes, and choosing from spectacular existing venues, wherever they are, rather than building new permanent or temporary stadiums, achieves more than $150 million in savings and new revenue to help maintain a balanced budget. We look forward to partnering with these venues, and their experienced operators and workforce, to deliver an unparalleled experience for athletes and fans in 2028.”
Among the significant updates, it was confirmed that Canoe Slalom and Softball competitions will not take place in Los Angeles. These events will be held in Oklahoma City instead, as stated in the press release, “[this decision] emphasizes sustainability by encouraging the use of existing venues beyond the region of the Host City. Both the Canoe Slalom and Softball venues in Oklahoma City are built to international competition standards, ensuring a high-quality experience for athletes and fans.”
The Intuit Dome in Inglewood, the future home of the Los Angeles Clippers, will host the men’s and women’s basketball tournaments. The Crypto.com Arena, known for hosting the LA Kings, Sparks, and Lakers, will be the stage for gymnastics competitions. What is touted as the “largest swimming venue in Olympic history,” will be held at SoFi Stadium, home to the LA Rams and Chargers. Track and field athletes and para-athletes will compete at the historic LA Memorial Coliseum.
Additional sports will be spread across other notable locations. BMX Freestyle, BMX Racing, and Skateboarding Park and Street events are set for the Sepulveda Basin Recreation Area in Encino. Diving competitions will take place at the iconic pool in Exposition Park. Long Beach is slated to host more aquatic events, and the details on these will follow at a later date.
Equestrian and Para Equestrian events will now be held in Temecula at a soon-to-be-confirmed venue, moving these competitions from their initial Sepulveda Dam Recreation Area location. Similarly, Shooting competitions will be relocated to another venue in Southern California, outside Los Angeles.
The Los Angeles 2028 Summer Olympics will mark the third time the city has hosted the prestigious event, with previous occasions being in 1932 and 1984.
