Pasadena police on Tuesday released video showing an officer shooting an allegedly armed suspect to death after the man fled during a traffic stop last month.

The shooting occurred April 13 in the 700 block of Oak Knoll Circle, according to the Pasadena Police Department. Officers were investigating a suspicious vehicle parked facing the wrong direction on a nearby one-way street. When police asked the driver of the pick-up truck who was found to be unlicensed to exit the vehicle, he instead started truck and drove off, nearly hitting an officer.

A brief pursuit followed, ending when the suspect crashed into a parked vehicle in the front yard of a home in the 800 block of Arden Road. He fled into a nearby neighborhood.

“While setting up a containment, Pasadena Police Dispatch received several calls about a man breaking into homes,” police said. “Minutes later, the suspect was located by air support in the backyard of a residence. A K9 unit was successfully deployed, and as officers attempted to apprehend the suspect, an officer-involved shooting occurred.”

The publicly available video has a blurred redaction that blocks viewing of the actual shooting and the suspect, who police identified as 36-year-old Ricardo Guade Andrade of San Fernando.

Audio of the incident reveals loud commands from officers for the suspect to drop a gun, and just prior to the sound of police gunfire, a voice that is presumably the suspect’s says, “I’m going to shoot myself.” Officers then yell “Gun, gun, gun!” and “Drop the gun!” before several gunshots are audible.

The police department’s Critical Incident Briefing Video includes in-car video footage, audio recordings and short descriptions of the video content, police said. The incident lasted about 34 minutes and involved an estimated 1 mile in the south side of Pasadena’s residential area. No officers were injured.

The officer-involved shooting is being investigated by Pasadena PD detectives, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office and the city of Pasadena.

Authorities asked anyone with information about the case to call the police department at 626-744-4241. Tipsters can also report information anonymously via Crime Stoppers: 800-222-TIPS, the P3 Tips mobile app or https://lacrimestoppers.org.
