The Riverside County Department of Waste Resources has organized a free Backyard Composting class and Make Your Own Worm Bin workshop Saturday in Moreno Valley.
Class attendees will learn how to recycle organic materials such as yard trimmings and vegetable refuse “into a dark, crumbly, sweet-smelling soil conditioner,” according to the Riverside County Department of Waste Resources. The class teaches residents that instead of putting organic waste into the garbage bound for the landfill, compost is an option for enriching the soil in gardens, lawns and house plants.
“These programs are offered to teach residents about the ease and advantages of organic material recycling and how composting helps preserve valuable space in county landfills,” according to the county.
The Backyard Composting class and demonstration starts at 9 a.m. followed by the worm bin workshop at 10 at the Riverside County Department of Waste Resources, 14310 Frederick St.
Compost bins costing $18 will be available for Riverside County residents to purchase.
Residents will then learn how to further breakdown food and yard waste with help from worms, through a process known as vermicomposting. The Vermicomposting and Make Your Own Worm Bin workshop will begin at 10 a.m., immediately following the composting class.
Adult county residents interested in the workshop can purchase a worm bin kit for $35 or bring their own supplies. For a short list of materials needed for the class, visit www.rcwaste.org/vermicomposting.
