LA County unemployment rate climbs slightly upward in October

Los Angeles County’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose slightly to 4.9% in October, up from a revised 4.7% in September, according to figures released Friday by the state Employment Development Department.

The 4.9% rate was well below the 7.3% rate in October 2021.

In Orange County, where seasonally adjusted numbers were not available, the October unemployment rate was 2.8%, up slightly from 2.7% in September.

Statewide, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 4% in October, up from 3.8% in September and below the 6.1% rate from October 2021. The comparable figures for the nation were 3.7% in October, 3.5% in September and 4.6% in October 2021.

Total nonfarm employment in Los Angeles County increased by 58,800 positions between September and October to reach more than 4.6 million. According to the EDD, total nonfarm employment has reached its highest  point since February 2020, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The educational and health services sector added 18,300 between October and September to lead the way, according to the EDD.
