Orange County’s COVID-19 positivity rates and hospitalizations remained about the same as last week as 29 more fatalities were recorded, with most of them occurring last month, according to the latest data from the Orange County Health Care Agency.
The fatalities boosted the overall death toll to 7,488. Seven of the 29 deaths happened this month, the first recorded so far for October. Twenty of the deaths happened in September, increasing last month’s death toll to 63. One fatality occurred in July, increasing that month’s death toll to 128, and another happened in May, boosting that month’s death toll to 37.
As of Friday, 117 were hospitalized in the county with COVID-19 with 18 being treated in intensive care.
The county, which provides updates on Thursdays, reported that COVID hospitalizations went from 116 last Friday to 148 on Monday, but was down to 125 on Wednesday. The number of intensive care unit patients went from 20 last Friday to 21 on Wednesday.
The county has 28.3% of its ICU beds available. Officials grow concerned that percentage drops below 20%.
Of those hospitalized 68.6% are incompletely or unvaccinated and 69.3% are similarly situated in ICU.
The county logged 1,328 cases, increasing the cumulative case count to 670,606.
The county’s test positivity rate went from 6.4% last week to 6.6%, with the statistic going from 6.4% to 7.3% in the health equity quartile, which measures the communities hardest hit by the pandemic. The daily case rate per 100,000 dropped from 7.2 to 6.6 on seven-day average with seven-day lag, and from 7.6 to 7 in the adjusted daily case rate per 100,000 on a seven-day average with a seven-day lag.
The positivity rate for those fully vaccinated with a booster went from 7.6 on Oct. 2 to 6.7 on Oct. 9, according to the latest data available. For those vaccinated with no booster the rate went from 4.9 to 3.4. For those not vaccinated the rate decreased from 7.9 to 5.9.
The number of residents fully vaccinated went from 2,353,187 last week to 2,354,756. The number of residents who have received at least one dose is 210,880. The number of booster shots administered increased from 1,379,689 to 1,380,438.
The number of children up to 4 years old, who have received at least one dose is 14,447 with 6,721 fully vaccinated. Just 3.6% of the county’s population in the age group is fully vaccinated.
For 5- to 11-year-old children, 96,741 are fully vaccinated, about 36.5% of the age group. In the 12-to-17 age group, 69.8% are fully vaccinated.
