Escaping into a new entertainment

Imagine you’ve just narrowly escaped an attack from a zombie horde and have barricaded yourself inside a seemingly abandoned house.

As you come to your senses, you realize you have been handcuffed to the wall. You turn to your left as you hear a maniacal chortle coming from the dusty television in the corner. The grisly voice graciously informs you that you have one hour to escape your entrapment before the room is filled with poisonous gas.

Real Life Video Game

Before you try and hit the “X” on your controller, you realize this is no video game – this is real life. As reality sets in, you frantically look to your companions for help. You’ve just entered an escape room. Do you have what it takes to outsmart a homicidal maniac before your 60 minutes are up?

You’ll just have to wait and see. But the clock is ticking.

What is an escape room?

Escape rooms are all the rage these days. Groups of 2-10 players have the opportunity to band together to try and outsmart a thrilling narrative.

From bloodthirsty zombie hordes to infamous murder mysteries, the whodunits are rich and the adrenaline is even richer when you enter the 500-square-foot chamber. These entertaining, collaborative activities make for a great birthday party activity, or even a way to turn your 2D gaming into a fully immersive 3D experience.

What you can expect

If you’re more the “jump scare” type, you might want to learn all you can before you take the plunge. Typically, a group of 10 or fewer individuals selects the narrative of their choice before getting locked into the space.  Themed rooms vary from family entertainment to edgy crime and horror.

From here, your group is given a series of versatile puzzles, mind-twisting riddles, and secret clues to solve before the time is up. These types of activities often warrant team collaboration and good time management as you race to finish the game.

Of course, the entire process is safe, and even though you feel your heart rate rising, you can rest assured that you are not in any literal danger.

What’s the challenge factor?

There is certainly no IQ test involved with an escape room, but it does help to be clever. Your escape room success rate has to do with experience, group chemistry, open-mindedness and overall wits about you.

If your group has completed escape rooms before, you likely have a better grasp on the process, and naturally, more confidence. Don’t be afraid to take risks and trust your gut!

Most escape room companies rank the specific experiences, ranging from beginner to advanced. If you are feeling unsure about your escape room abilities, be sure to start with a simpler narrative.
