The Los Angeles-based Roddenberry Foundation announced Wednesday a biennial $1.5 million prize to support emerging science and technology ventures focused on improving human lives and protecting the environment.
Designed to advance the vision of “Star Trek” creator Gene Roddenberry, The Roddenberry Prize will present $1 million to the winner, and $100,000 awards to five finalists, to recognize ventures that are “leading us towards a better, healthier, and more prosperous future,” according to the foundation.
“We are excited to support early-stage ventures that hold the potential for radical change,” Rod Roddenberry, Gene’s son, said in a statement. “My father envisioned a future without hunger, poverty or war. Through The Roddenberry Prize, we seek to find and support organizations who are making that vision a reality.”
According to the foundation, the prizes will be awarded to ventures that address one or more of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals established in 2015 by the United Nations General Assembly, with the goal of being achieved by 2030.
“As we look ahead, it’s clear that if we want everyone — regardless of background — to thrive, we need to rethink how we produce and distribute food; how we design and construct our homes; how we travel, access clean water, and do business; and how we protect the planet,” said Heidi Roddenberry, chair of the Foundation’s board. “Our hope is that The Roddenberry Prize helps advance the ideas and solutions that will lead to new realities.”
Applicants must be nominated by foundations, impact investors, venture capitalists, accelerators or similar organizations by Sept. 2. Six finalists will make presentations to the foundation’s staff and board, which will select the grand prize winner.
