Authorities on Friday identified a bicyclist from San Bernardino County who was killed in a crash in the Azusa area.

The crash took place at mile marker 24.10 on San Gabriel Canyon Road (state Route 39) around 10:15 a.m. Thursday, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Stephen Naftilan, 74, of Upland died at the scene, according to the Los Angeles County coroner’s office and the CHP.

“For reasons unknown at this time, (he) was unable to keep his bicycle upright and the right side of (his) bicycle crashed into the asphalt roadway,” the CHP said in a statement. “A passerby and another bicyclist who observed the crash responded … and observed he was unresponsive.”

The circumstances of the crash were under investigation.

“Alcohol or drugs are not considered to be a factor at this time,” the CHP said.

Anyone with information on the case was urged to call the CHP Baldwin Park Area office at 626-338-1164.
