The Angel Stadium portion of the Freeway Series begins Friday evening with the Dodgers and Angels headed in opposite directions.

The Dodgers (58-30) have won nine of their last 10 games, share Major League Baseball’s second-best record with the Houston Astros, have the National League’s best record and a 9 1/2-game lead over the San Diego Padres in the NL West.

The Angels (39-51) have lost 10 of their last 12 games, are in fourth in the five-team AL West and trail Houston by 20 games. They were one game behind the Astros on May 24 before beginning a franchise-record 14-game losing streak that prompted the firing of manager Joe Maddon 12 games into the streak.

The Dodgers defeated the Angels 2-0 and 4-1 June 14-15 at Dodger Stadium.

The Angels lead the all-time series, which began in 1997, 73-65, including a 42-26 advantage at Angel Stadium.

All-Star Clayton Kershaw (6-2) will start for the Dodgers while the Angels will counter with fellow left-hander Patrick Sandoval (3-4).

In his last start, Kershaw allowed two runs (one earned) and five hits in 7 2/3 innings, striking out 10 and not walking a batter in a 4-2 victory over the Chicago Cubs Saturday at Dodger Stadium that gave him sole possession of third on the Dodgers’ all-time list with 191 victories, breaking a tie with Hall of Famer Dazzy Vance. Hall of Famers Don Sutton (233) and Don Drysdale (209) are first and second.

Sandoval allowed one run on five hits in 6 1/3 innings in his most recent start, striking out 10 and walking two and was charged with the loss in a 1-0 loss at Baltimore Saturday.

Kershaw is 8-2 with a 2.31 ERA in 14 starts against the Angels. Sandoval is 0-2 with a 4.76 ERA in four career starts against the Dodgers.

The Dodgers are 6-5 in Kershaw’s 11 starts this season. The Angels are 7-7 in Sandoval’s 14 starts.

Angels all-star outfielder Mike Trout has not played since being removed from Tuesday’s game because of back spasms.

The Angels will wear their City Connect jerseys.

The game is set to start at 6:38 p.m. and will be televised by Bally Sports West and SportsNet LA.

The series will conclude Saturday with a 7:07 p.m. game. The Dodgers and Angels will then have their lone Sunday off day of the season because of a scheduling quirk related to interleague play.
