A tile mural near the El Sereno Arroyo Playground was unveiled Friday as part of an effort to beautify the neighborhood and provide better pedestrian access.

The “El Sereno Serape” mural, near Concord and Alhambra avenues, was created by artist Sonia Romero on a hillside retaining wall that was needed when the Bureau of Street Services built a new sidewalk in El Sereno. In an effort to use the wall as an opportunity to beautify the neighborhood, the city commissioned Romero for the project.

“Public art reflects our values and cultures as a city,” Councilman Kevin de León, who represents the neighborhood, said Friday. “This beautiful mosaic celebrates the best of who we are as Angelenos and will highlight the beauty and community of El Sereno for years to come.”

The mural is made of 2,800 8-inch-square ceramic tiles themed around family, landscape and history. The family tiles, which represent El Sereno residents and the community, were created through photo submissions from the community. The landscape tiles represent El Sereno’s hills and valleys, and the history tiles represent the El Arroyo Rosa De Castilla and the Tongva people.
