Monrovia Old Town Report: A hello to a local legend – Rudy Castrellon

On Wednesday, Feb. 9, Rudy’s Mexican Food once again opened its doors to receive its loyal customers. Did they temporarily close due to staffing issues? Was it Covid related? I’m not sure. Staff returned in spiffy new uniform shirts to greet customers aplenty. Knowing Rudy and Rosa, I am certain they graciously greeted each and every customer, personally. I know I am not the only person thrilled to see Rudy’s open and busier than ever!

The Jan. 20 Monrovia Old Town Report was titled “A goodbye to a local legend.” I’m not certain how many people read the actual article, but it appears that a select few focused only on the title. Had they read the article in its entirety they would have learned that the first paragraph clearly stated that rumors were running amok. The rest of the article was about a few of the many accomplishments Rudy has achieved. He is a remarkable man and clearly adored by many.

How many people garner their “news” from reading only the title versus reading the actual column? Unfortunately, a lot of people. It is quite indicative of today’s social climate. It was sadly comical to see a few locals work themselves into a frenzy over the last Rudy’s article. Is frenzy the right word? Maybe hissy fit is better? Temper tantrum also seems quite fitting. It was downright Rumpelstiltskiny; very Grimm, indeed (insert winky emoji for being punny).

Phineas T. Barnum once said, “There is no such thing as bad publicity.” However, I’m more of an Oscar Wilde fan, and he said, “There’s only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about.” All I know is this: people came out in droves to support Rudy when they thought he needed them most. As they should! That is one of the things that makes [Old Town] Monrovia so special. We fight sometimes, but more importantly, we fight for our small businesses. The love for Old Town is the one thing that unites us all.

So, support Rudy’s. Support Peach Café and The Saltner. Support TLC Nail Spa and The Acai Bar. Go eat at Sunday’s Old Town Bistro, in their newly remodeled restaurant.   Support Charlies House, Neighborhood Pawn and Dream Décor. Go to Sainte Clarks. Not getting married? So, what — buy the darn tiara! Support ALL the small businesses in Monrovia. They all need it, not just the restaurants. Unplug your Amazon and shop in town. It’s not always possible, but when it is, do it. Your local small businesses will thank you!
