Hey SoCal! This past week, the existence of a rare flower threatened a California mining operation. Or, to put it in Pokemon, the grass-types beat the rock-types.
And for more news, noise, and nonsense you may have missed, Mike Ciriaco is bringing back to your brain with this week’s Deja News.
LA city council approved a motion banning illegal dumping.
The Los Angeles City Council Tuesday approved components of a plan aimed at reducing illegal dumping throughout the city, including by shortening the time it takes to deploy cleanup teams when a report is made about excess trash and debris.
“The city of Los Angeles is facing a crisis when it comes to trash, bulky items and illegal dumping. In every corner of the city, pieces of furniture, loose debris and trash piles are prevalent,” Councilman Kevin de León wrote in one of five motions introduced Feb. 1 as part of his “Clean Streets Now” plan.
Four of the five motions were passed 11-0 Tuesday. The fifth motion has not yet been considered by the council.
And speaking of Hollywood, Dr Strange star Benedict Cumberbatch was added to the Walk of Fame. (and look, he magicked up his own star lol)
A star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame was unveiled Monday honoring Benedict Cumberbatch for a career that has brought him an Emmy and two best actor Oscar nominations.
J.J. Abrams and Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige were among those joining Cumberbatch at the ceremony at 6918 Hollywood Blvd. in front of The Line Store. The ceremony will be streamed on the Walk of Fame’s website, www.walkoffame.com.
Abrams directed Cumberbatch in the 2013 film, “Star Trek Into Darkness.” Cumberbatch has portrayed Doctor Strange in six Marvel films including “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” set to be released May 6.
Wednesday is Ash Wednesday, which this year is not only the start of the 40-day season of Lent, but also a day of fasting for peace as declared by Pope Francis.
The pope appealed to everyone — believers and non-believers alike — to make Wednesday “a day of fasting for peace,” including encouraging believers “in a special way to dedicate themselves intensely to prayer and fasting,” citing Jesus’ teaching that the “senselessness of violence is answered with God’s weapons, with prayer and fasting.”
During Lent, the faithful prepare for Easter by doing penance for sins and seeking spiritual renewal through prayer, discipline and good works.
