Hey SoCal! Happy President’s Day! To date, we’ve only had one US president born in Southern California: Richard Milhous Nixon… and he SUCKED! So, in honor of this presidential holiday, Mike Ciriaco spills the tea on Tricky Dick and why he was such a sweat-stain on American history.
Born in Yorba Linda, Nixon’s use of dirty campaign tactics, such as smearing opponents as “communist,” earned him the nickname “Tricky Dick.”
But, these underhanded schemes couldn’t help him in 1960 during his televised presidential debate against John F Kennedy. America watched a handsome progressive radiating charm, versus a regressive crank oozing sweat. (And we know how sweating on TV comes across, right Guilianni?)
The nadir of Nixon’s political career was the Watergate scandal, when members of his administration were caught breaking into the Democratic Party headquarters. Facing impeachment, Tricky Dick chose to resign in disgrace.
Obviously, Nixon isn’t a role model, he’s a cautionary tale. The next Southern Californian in the White House needs to be better than this jowly jerkwad. We’re SoCal: we’re progressive, we’re empathic, we’re fresh. Change is our intention.
