A man was fatally stabbed on a west Riverside street, and police briefly detained a possible suspect, who was ultimately released, authorities said Thursday.

The attack happened about 1:50 p.m. Wednesday in the 10900 block of Magnolia Avenue, near Park Sierra Drive, adjacent to Kaiser Permanente Riverside Medical Center, according to the Riverside Police Department.

Agency spokesman Officer Ryan Railsback said that patrol officers were sent to the location to investigate reports of a knife assault and found the victim, whose identity was not immediately disclosed, mortally wounded.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics a short time later.

Railsback said patrolmen “safely detained the possible suspect,” who was turned over to homicide detectives for questioning.

“The suspect was later released pending further review of what occurred,” the police spokesman said.

The person’s identity was not disclosed, and a possible motive was not mentioned.

The area, with the exception of the hospital, was closed to foot and vehicular traffic for several hours.
