Monrovia ‘Chalksgiving’ event invites the community to show their art

Residents are welcome to show their artistic work at the annual “Chalksgiving” art contest held by the Monrovia Association of Fine Arts (MAFA) from Thursday, Nov. 25 through Sunday, Nov. 28.

It is a fun, free, family-oriented event where amateurs and professionals can register and compete for prizes.

All Monrovia residents are encouraged to enter. Artists under the age of 18 will need parental permission and the parent should appear in the art photograph with the child. Chalk artists from all over the country are also eligible to participate. You can register on MAFA’s official website at monroviafinearts.org.

Once registered, participants can receive their own free starter kit by visiting the association’s partner office — located at Century 21 Adams & Barnes on 433 W. Foothill Blvd. — by going to the front desk, asking for the kit and giving the last name you used to register for Chalksgiving.

The chalk art can be done on a sidewalk, driveway, or any surface that welcomes chalk art near your home. Photographs of the artwork must be submitted by the deadline of midnight on Nov. 28.

Photos are submitted by emailing christine@monroviafinearts.org, along with providing the submission form given upon registration. Two photos must be sent in order to be considered for prizes: one with the art alone and the other with the art and its creator(s). Both photos must include the MAFA logo placard at the lower right-hand corner of the photos.

Winners will be determined by a MAFA jury panel whose decision is final. Top ten finalists in each category will be announced on MAFA’s Facebook page and finalists notified by email in the first week of December. The first, second and third place winners in each category will be announced the following week, and prizes will then be available for pickup at the partner office.

Prizes will include $50 gift certificates for local Monrovia small businesses chosen in a drawing by the Monrovia Chamber president.
