A murder suspect shot and wounded a California Highway Patrol officer Tuesday on a freeway transition road in Paramount, prompting officers to return fire, leaving the suspect injured in unknown condition.
The shooting occurred around 8:30 a.m. on the transition road between the westbound Glenn Anderson (105) Freeway to the northbound Long Beach (710) Freeway, which was closed afterward so an investigation could be conducted, according to the CHP.
The entire 105 Freeway was briefly closed in both directions after the shooting, creating a traffic nightmare in the region. The Garfield Avenue onramp to the northbound 710 Freeway was also closed due to the investigation.
Initial reports from the scene indicated the suspect’s minivan was apparently disabled on the side of the freeway transition road, and the shooting occurred when officers stopped to investigate. Fox11 reported that the suspect was wanted in connection with a recent double-homicide, although no details were released, and there was apparently a short standoff before the gunfire erupted.
The station reported that the wounded CHP officer suffered a graze wound to the head, and he could be seen walking in the area after the shooting and being treated at the scene.
There was no immediate word on the condition of the suspect. At least one report from the scene indicated that paramedics performed CPR on the suspect before the person was taken away via ambulance.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department reported only that paramedics took one person to a hospital in unknown condition.
