A pedestrian was fatally hit by a big rig in Long Beach, authorities said Friday.
The man was injured about 6 p.m. Thursday at Pacific Coast Highway and Hayes Avenue and died at the scene, according to the Long Beach Police Department. His name was not known, police said.
“The preliminary investigation revealed the pedestrian was standing in the street near the north curb of Pacific Coast Highway and suddenly ran southbound across lanes of traffic,” police said in a statement. “The pedestrian was then struck by a semi-truck.”
The trucker, whose name was not released, remained at the scene and was interviewed by police.
“Speed, distracted driving and driving under the influence were not considered to be a factor in this collision,” police said. “It is unknown whether the pedestrian was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.”
Anyone with information on the case was urged to call police at 562- 570-7355, or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.
