COVID-19’s impact on LAPD, LAFD revealed in new data

Authorities Friday gave updated numbers on how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the ranks of the Los Angeles police and fire departments.

According to the city of Los Angeles’ Emergency Management Department, eight LAPD sworn employees and two civilian employees have died due to COVID-19 — numbers that had been reported earlier in the week, with the most recent COVID death of an LAPD officer.

In all, according to the EMD, the LAPD has 2,822 employees who have tested positive for the coronavirus, with one reported reinfection.

In addition, 105 LAPD employees are self-isolating at home and recovering due to exposure, while 2,725 employees have returned to work, the EOC reported.

Meanwhile, the Fire Department reported that two sworn employees have died due to COVID-19.

The total number of LAFD employees who have tested positive for COVID- 19 is 995, and 22 employees continue to recover at home due to exposure, while 970 LAFD employees have recovered and returned to duty, the EMD reported.

The statistics are current through Thursday.

The LAPD’s eighth COVID-related death occurred Monday, when Officer Becky V. Strong, most recently assigned to the department’s South Division Traffic, died.
