A man was hospitalized in critical condition and was undergoing surgery Monday for a bullet wound to the lower body after a drive-by shooting in Carson in which as many as 25 shots may have been fired, authorities said.
The shooting was reported about 10 p.m. Sunday on Denwell Drive near Tillman Avenue, said Sgt A. Huerta of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Carson Station.
A silver Mercedes-Benz SUV stopped near the intersection and someone inside fired at a man on the street, striking him once in the lower body, she said.
The SUV continued west on Denwell Drive and stopped at Scobey Avenue when the front passenger got out and fired about 20 more rounds at the victim and got back inside as the SUV fled the scene, Huerta said.
Paramedics took the victim to Harbor UCLA Medical Center, she said.
Investigators recovered 25 9mm shell casings, Huerta said.
Authorities believe the wounded man was the intended victim because of all the shots fired in his direction, even though all but one missed the target, she said. It was unknown whether the shooting was gang related.
