A stretch of Walnut Avenue north of Arrow Highway in San Dimas closed Friday and will remain closed for the next five months to accommodate construction work on the Foothill Gold Line light-rail extension project.
Construction crews will be rebuilding the railroad crossing at Walnut, necessitating a full closure of the street between Arrow Highway and Bonita Avenue to vehicles and pedestrians until Nov. 18, according to the Foothill Gold Line Construction Authority. Local business and residential access will be maintained.
The project will require the relocation of underground utilities and the freight track, as well as the installation of safety equipment and one of the two light-rail tracks. The street will need to be rebuilt, along with curbs, gutters and sidewalks. An additional closure of the street is anticipated next summer to remove the old freight track, install the second light-rail track and install remaining safety equipment.
Traffic on Bonita Avenue and Arrow Highway will not be affected. Motorists are being advised to use San Dimas Avenue as a north-south alternative to Walnut Avenue.
The construction is part of the 9.1-mile extension of the Gold Line light rail line from Glendora to Pomona, a project scheduled for completion in 2025. The line will ultimately extend to Claremont and Montclair.
