An 18-year-old man shot to death in Maywood was publicly identified Thursday.

Brandon Fonseca Vargas was a Downey resident, according to the coroner’s office.

The shooting was reported at 11:08 p.m. Monday in the 6100 block of Wilcox Avenue, near the border with Bell, Deputy Tracy Koerner of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau said.

Deputies arriving in the residential area near the Los Angeles River and Long Beach (710) Freeway found the victim now identified as Vargas, who was pronounced dead at the scene, Koerner said.

Just after 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, the sheriff’s Special Enforcement Bureau tweeted: “SEB SWAT canine operation with canine ‘Nero’ for a homicide suspect in the city of Maywood has concluded. Suspect in custody. Wilcox Ave reopened. Neighborhood safe.”

A statement issued by the SIB about 6:30 a.m. said the male suspect was found and detained near a bus bench in the area of Florence and Wilcox, a short distance south of where the shooting occurred.
